Clinical evaluation of the efficiency of the MiS Micro-Stimulation-System “Thevo-Activ”

Abstract of the first results

Design of the study
The study will be conducted firstly in elderly homes according to a randomised comparative design over a period of 28 days per inhabitant. Besides demographic and medical data, validated scales for the decubitus risk assessment of the variables “mobility, orientation and pain” have been used. Photographic documentation of the wound area, a standardised wound documentation as well as information about the felt comfort of the used system or rather the mattress, has been added.

Data analysis
In the context of presenting the first results of the preliminary investigation of altogether 17 patients, methods of the descriptive statistics have been used.

The main criterion of the study, the healing rate or rather the healing tendency, was analysed in the explorative-descriptive sense. Drop-outs are specified indicating the time and the reason of termination.

Conclusion
The results of the examination were showing that the chosen methodology is appropriate to answer the basic question. It is very interesting to see that nine patients were not showing any negative development of the wounds after relocation from a big-celled alternating system to a static system. This could stand in connection with the increased vestibular and somatic stimulation due to the active use of Thevo-Activ.

A trend result is visible in the sense of the cause-action-principle. To evaluate the assumed effect at a bigger case number, the consequential observation of the individual patient movement pattern and the healing tendency is absolutely necessary. This statement has to be considered particularly regarding the changing pain situation.

A further important aspect is the influencing of the mental disorder situation. At the above described case study, it becomes apparent that an optimisation of the metal disorder situation can be reached through consequent involvement of nursing activities, especially the communication. To come to a generally accepted statement for this problem, a further concentration to this side-question is necessary.

As already determined in available studies (Dassen 2001, Püschel 1998), it has been confirmed that the chronic wound at elderly and geriatric people represents not only a caring but also an inter-professional problem. For that reason, we have to look also for inter-professional solution.
